Macaulay Culkin has sparked fresh buzz around the Home Alone franchise with a surprising idea for a sequel. During a recent live event, the actor revealed a concept that flips the original story on its head. As speculation grows, fans are paying close attention to what could be an unexpected return to one of Hollywood’s most iconic roles.
Macaulay Culkin wants a Home Alone sequel showing Kevin McCallister vs. his son
Macaulay Culkin recently suggested during his A Nostalgic Night with Macaulay Culkin tour that he would be open to bringing his Kevin McCallister role in a new Home Alone sequel, saying, “[I] wouldn’t be completely allergic.” However, he emphasized, “It would have to be just right.” (via Variety)
Culkin then went on to reveal his personal pitch for a sequel in which Kevin is either a widower or a divorcee, raising his son while dealing with work-related distractions and emotional distance.
“I kind of had this idea,” Culkin explained, adding, “I’m either a widower or a divorcee. I’m raising a kid and all that stuff. I’m working really hard, and I’m not really paying enough attention, and the kid is kind of getting miffed at me, and then I get locked out. [Kevin’s son] won’t let me in… and he’s the one setting traps for me.” He further stated, “The house is some sort of metaphor for our relationship,” and described it as a story where Kevin has to “get let back into [his] son’s heart.”
Culkin’s concept shifts the classic formula. Kevin now becomes the one facing the traps, in a way, replacing the original villains. He called it the “closest elevator pitch” he currently has for a potential sequel.
Culkin rose to fame in the 1990s as Kevin McCallister in the original Home Alone. The film earned $476 million worldwide. He returned for Home Alone 2: Lost in New York in 1992 but skipped the later sequels.
Director Chris Columbus, who directed the first two Home Alone films, spoke in August 2025 with Entertainment Weekly. He said no one should make a new Home Alone movie. “You can’t really recapture that,” Columbus said. “I think it should be left alone.”
