Macaulay Culkin, who is currently touring various locations for Home Alone’s 35th anniversary screening tour, got a strong reaction from the audience when he weighed in on an argument about whether Die Hard is a Christmas movie or not.
Culkin was at the event titled “A Nostalgic Night with Macaulay Culkin” at Long Beach when he named his favorite holiday films. Soon, he mentioned the Bruce Willis movie that drew attention immediately from fans.
Macaulay Culkin booed after revealing his thoughts on whether Die Hard is a Christmas movie
Macaulay Culkin, when mentioning the Christmas classics that he likes, named a few classic titles. He expressed, “A big one in our household growing up was A Christmas Story, certainly was always on. A lost classic or one that people kind of forget: Scrooged…. Scrooged is awesome, though. Yeah, we watch it all the time. Those were ones that really stick out” (via A Nostalgic Night with Macaulay Culkin).
Soon, calling out the controversy, he said, “There’s some ones that come later. Elf is a really good one, but I wasn’t raised on Elf, so it doesn’t have that nostalgia factor. And also, okay guys for real: Die Hard isn’t a Christmas movie.”
This sentence led to a lot of boos from the audience. However, the Home Alone actor continued, “I know. Some of you guys want to fight me. I’ll meet you at the loading dock, but it’s just a movie that’s set at Christmas. If you set it at St. Patrick’s Day, the exact same movie. But you set Home Alone at St. Patrick’s Day…” (via PEOPLE)
The reason that Die Hard is being debated as a Christmas movie is that it is set during the holiday. At the end, it represents hope for the lead character, John McClane, that he shall go back to his wife on Christmas morning and celebrate the holiday with the kids. Additionally, it snowed, which adds to the factor.
