Elijah Wood talks about Ian McKellen’s comment about Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum
Elijah Wood addressed Ian McKellen’s comments about a Frodo and Gandalf reunion in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum during a panel at FAN EXPO New Orleans.
Asked about McKellen’s statement, Wood said, “I can neither confirm nor deny. Listen, a wizard is to be trusted. Aside from any of that, I’m not really allowed to confirm.” He continued, “I’m really excited about the film… It really is a creative ‘getting the band back together.’” Wood emphasized the return of key creatives, stating, “Philippa [Boyens] I think, is co-writing it and producing it… that core original group [is] getting back together” (via Screen Rant).
Wood added that Andy Serkis directing the film is “unbelievably appropriate” since “he directs a film about his character that he has really made his own.” He also noted, “I know their intention is to make other films in this universe… very exciting.” Wood did not confirm his casting in The Hunt for Gollum. He did, however, express excitement about the project and its connections to the original trilogy.
At the “For the Love of Fantasy” fan event in London, McKellen confirmed that “There’s a character in the movie called Frodo and another character called Gandalf, and apart from that, my lips are sealed.” He also stated that they will begin filming in May 2026. Both McKellen and Wood attended the event.
Andy Serkis directs the film and reprises his role as Gollum. The story takes place just before The Fellowship of the Ring and follows Gandalf’s search for Gollum. Philippa Boyens, Fran Walsh, Phoebe Gittins, Arty Papageorgiou, and J.R.R. Tolkien wrote the screenplay. The film releases on December 17, 2027.
