Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse has gone through a number of delays. Writers Phil Lord and Chris Miller recently explained why.

What did Lord and Miller say about Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse delays?

Speaking to Gizmodo in a recent interview, writers Lord and Miller (who co-wrote the upcoming movie alongside David Callaham) talked about the multiple delays the movie has faced. The movie was originally planned to be released on March 29, 2024, however, it was removed from Sony’s calendar in July 2023 due to delays from the writers’ and actors’ strikes. Since then, the film has had several different release date shifts.

According to Miller, a big reason for the delay was due to the fact that, at some point, the movie was split into two different movies. Then, that plan was scrapped.

“At one point it was one movie, but there was too much movie there, so it was separated into two,” Miller said. “But then once you looked at that second half of a movie, you’re like, ‘Well, that’s like not just a story arc that has a beginning, middle, and end.”

Lord then opened up on the underlying motives behind the upcoming movie and how hard it was to land on the beats of the movies. “We know where it’s headed, but we need to understand better what’s happening in the middle,” Lord said. “And we came upon a really wonderful notion, which is when your family is broken apart by your calling, your talents, how do you put them back together? How do you have it all?”

Following various delays, Beyond the Spider-Verse is now set to release on June 18, 2027.
