The reboot introduces Liam Neeson as Lieutenant Frank Drebin Jr. The film’s other cast members include Pamela Anderson as Beth Davenport, Paul Walter Hauser as Capt. Ed Hocken Jr., Danny Huston as Richard Cane, and CCH Pounder as Chief Davis.
The Naked Gun follows Drebin Jr. as he attempts to revive the reputation of the LAPD’s Police Squad. The story begins with Drebin Jr. working undercover to stop a robbery, not realizing the crime is a distraction for the theft of an advanced device known as the P.L.O.T. Device.
Upon release, The Naked Gun received strong critical approval. It currently holds an 87 percent approval score on Rotten Tomatoes from 334 critic reviews. Meanwhile, the audience rating sits at 73 percent.
Wenlei Ma of The Nightly called the movie “an unadulterated good time, absolutely brimming with sight gags, one-liners and goofy humour.” She added, “The original films were known for being unapologetically silly, and this sequel did not scrimp. It’s dumb but brilliantly dumb.”
The film also performed well at the box office, earning over $52 million at the domestic box office. It also earned around $49.5 million internationally. With its upcoming streaming launch, the film is expected to reach an even wider audience. (via Box Office Mojo)
