Liam Neeson has addressed the possibility of returning for Sam Raimi’s upcoming Darkman sequel. As development on the new installment moves forward, the actor shared an update on his potential return.
Liam Neeson hasn’t heard from Sam Raimi about Darkman sequel
Liam Neeson has revealed that he has not been approached about returning for the newly announced Darkman sequel, even as director Sam Raimi moves forward with plans to revive the franchise. The actor confirmed that he has not had any discussions with Raimi regarding the project, leaving his involvement uncertain.
In an interview with ScreenRant, Neeson addressed reports that a new installment is in development. The actor made clear that no one has contacted him about reprising the role of Dr. Peyton Westlake. He noted that two sequels were previously produced without his participation, referring to the direct-to-video follow-ups. At the time of the interview, Neeson was unaware that the newly announced sequel is a direct follow-up to the first film.
Despite the lack of communication, the actor expressed openness to returning. He stated that he would be interested in working with Raimi again and is curious about how the character might be adapted for a modern audience. “I’d love to work with Sam,” Neeson said.
Released in 1990, Darkman was directed by Raimi and starred Neeson as Dr. Westlake, a scientist who is brutally attacked and left severely burned after his girlfriend uncovers corruption involving a powerful real estate developer. Surviving the assault, Westlake undergoes an experimental procedure that removes his ability to feel pain while increasing his physical strength.
Furthermore, Raimi revealed in late January that a script for the new film is already completed. Meanwhile, his production company, Ghost House Pictures, is backing the project. Further details about the story are being kept confidential. For now, Neeson’s involvement remains uncertain in Darkman sequel.
