Landman just concluded its acclaimed second season, and after a brilliant finale, many continue to wonder why Landman is not more popular than it currently is, especially in the award circles. Series star Billy Bob Thornton has an answer to this debate.
Billy Bob Thornton thinks Taylor Sheridan’s shows are ‘political’
Billy Bob Thornton, who plays Tommy Norris in Landman, spoke to Variety in detail after the conclusion of the second season of Landman. The finale saw some huge developments and left behind enough spark for a third season, which has already been confirmed.
But many have noted that Landman is actually better as a series than what its award show performances indicate. Moreover, this is a trend seen in many works of Taylor Sheridan. During his interview with Variety, Thornton was asked about this.
Answering why he thinks Sheridan’s shows were “underrepresented in award conversations,” Thornton said, “I think a lot of it’s political. I really do.”
Expanding on his point, Sheridan said, “I think some people assume Taylor is some sort of right-wing guy or something, and he’s really not. Even with this show being about the oil business, he just shows you what it’s like. He’s not saying “Rah, rah, rah for oil.””
He continued, “It’s just the people who work in this business or who are affected by this business, the people on the periphery and within the families in the business; this is what happens. These are the kinds of problems and joys and triumphs and whatever happens in this world. It’s a world of gambling, and you never know what’s going to happen. But I think people got the wrong idea about that.”
So, it seems that Billy Bob Thornton believes the politics associated with Landman are the reason it is not more mainstream.
Landman Season 2 is now streaming on Paramount+. A third season of the show will arrive soon.
