Kristin Chenoweth’s The Queen of Versailles is set to close in January 2026. The musical officially opened on November 9 at the St. James Theatre. Just two weeks into its Broadway run, it’s already slated to end earlier than expected due to poor reviews. Still, it has performed reasonably well at the box office, and the early closing announcement ahead of the holiday season gives it a chance to draw more viewers before it wraps.
Here are all the details on the future of The Queen Of Versailles.
The Queen of Versailles Broadway musical to shut down in January
Kristin Chenoweth’s The Queen of Versailles page recently took to Instagram to announce their final Broadway show before it shuts down. Its caption read, “Consider this your royal summons. The Queen of Versailles will play its final Broadway performance on January 4th! Get tickets at the link in bio before time runs out.”
This musical is based on a 2012 documentary of the same name. It centers around a true story of a Florida couple who intend to build the most extravagant home in 2008. Their wish faces a hindrance when a financial crisis hits. It premiered on October 8 before officially debuting the next month. Sadly, the musical received a negative reception, prompting its closure. Many critics from reputable outlets have published their reviews, highlighting both the positives and negatives of the Broadway show.
Some claimed that the songs in Kristin Chenoweth’s The Queen of Versailles are just one of many problems plaguing an identity crisis of a show that doesn’t quite seem to know what it wants to be. Meanwhile, other critics praised the first act but found the second act dragged out. Despite the mixed to negative reviews of the musical, it has made over $1 million a week after its debut.
