More than 35 years after its initial release, one of the best-reviewed features of the acclaimed Studio Ghibli, whose voice cast features Kirsten Dunst, will once again be coming out on the big screen. Directed, written, and produced by the visionary Hayao Miyazaki, Kiki’s Delivery Service is currently on track for an Imax re-release, albeit for a limited period.
Kiki’s Delivery Service to have a 4K Imax release in March
Based on Eiko Kadono’s 1985 novel of the same name, Kiki’s Delivery Service is set to re-release exclusively in Imax theaters, this time newly remastered in 4K.
The 1989 movie, which boasts a critic score of 98% and an audience score of 89% on Rotten Tomatoes, will begin its second theatrical run on March 13, 2026.
The fantasy flick revolves around the misadventures of a 13-year-old witch, Kiki, who dreams of mastering her magical prowess. In her pursuit of perfecting her craft and becoming independent, she moves to a seaside town and starts her own high-flying delivery service. However, Kiki’s world turns upside down when her internal struggles end up dampening her abilities. In a flash, she becomes incapable of flying her broom or conversing with her cat.
One-Punch Man fame Minami Takayama leads the talented voice cast as the titular Kiki. Meanwhile, Kirsten Dunst portrays the young witch in the English dub. The supporting line-up also features Rei Sakuma/Phil Hartman as Jiji, Keiko Toda/Tress MacNeille as Osono, Minami Takayama/Janeane Garofalo as Urusura, and Kappei Yamaguchi/Matthew Lawrence as Tonbo, among others.
During its original run, Kiki’s Delivery Service not only impressed viewers and critics with its impactful subject but also managed to earn close to $10.5 million worldwide, as per Box Office Mojo.
Tickets for the re-release of Kiki’s Delivery Service have already gone on sale on Imax’s official website. Moreover, anime enthusiasts who wish to catch the iconic Studio Ghibli feature on the big screen have the option to view the movie either with its original Japanese voiceover or the English dub.
