Joker: Folie á Deux, also known as Joker 2, resulted in a nearly $150 million net loss for Warner Bros.

Joker 2 was released in United States theaters in October 2024. Directed by Todd Phillips, the sequel to the hit Joker movie from 2019 saw Joaquin Phoenix reprise his role as Arthur Fleck, while Lady Gaga played Harley “Lee” Quinzel.

Folie á Deux was not a hit at the box office. Globally, the movie made around $207.5 million, which is a disappointing figure given that the first Joker made over a billion dollars. It also proved to be controversial amongst fans and critics, as the movie currently has a 31 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes and won a handful of Razzie Awards.

How much money did Warner Bros. lose on Joker: Folie à Deux?

According to a new report from Deadline, the release of Joker 2 resulted in an approximate $144.25 million net loss for Warner Bros. That’s about how much the budget for the 2017 Wonder Woman movie was, as that DCEU film had $149 million in production costs. Wonder Woman, however, was far more profitable, as it grossed around $824 million at the global box office.

The reason for the loss is not only because of the low box office results, but also because Joker 2 had $200 million in production costs, while another $106.3 million was spent on print and ads. In total, the movie made $227 million in revenue and cost $371.3 million in expenses, bringing the studio’s net loss to negative $144.3 million.

Along with Phoenix and Gaga, Joker 2 stars Brendan Gleeson as Jackie Sullivan, Catherine Keener as Maryanne Stewart, Steve Coogan as Paddy Meyers, Zazie Beetz as Sophie Dumond, Harry Lawtey as Harvey Dent, Leigh Gill as Gary Puddles, and more.

Joker: Folie á Deux is currently available to stream on Max.
