For years, the question of whether Johnny Depp would ever step back into Captain Jack Sparrow’s boots has lingered like a fog over the Pirates of the Caribbean 6. Now, one of the franchise’s influential voices has spoken, and the news looks better than anyone could have hoped.
All hope isn’t lost on Johnny Depp’s Pirates of the Caribbean 6 return
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has officially set the record straight, extinguishing rumors that Disney is moving forward without its beloved captain. In an interview with The Direct at the Producers Guild Awards, Bruckheimer was unequivocal about his intentions for the sixth installment.
When asked directly about the swirling rumors that Pirates of the Caribbean 6 was being developed without Johnny Depp, Bruckheimer stated, “First of all, that’s not true.” Then added, “No, no, no. Johnny… if it’s up to me, he’ll be in it.”
As the producer credited on all five previous Pirates movies, Bruckheimer is among the architects of the franchise’s success. His ongoing involvement suggests that he possibly has massive influence over how Pirates 6 comes together, and his public commitment to Johnny Depp’s involvement is one of the strongest signs yet that Jack Sparrow will sail again.
Furthermore, the timing of this update is crucial. Recent reports from February 2026 suggested the next movie would focus on Jack Sparrow’s son, potentially passing the torch to a new lead. While that storyline could still be in play, Bruckheimer’s comments indicate that it doesn’t have to mean Depp’s exclusion. A cameo or supporting role could create a satisfying bridge between the old guard and new characters, much like how other legacy franchises have handled transitions.
However, Depp’s willingness to return remains a factor, but the signs are encouraging. In July 2023, a source close to the actor told People that “anything is possible” regarding a return to the franchise. Then, in August 2025, Bruckheimer himself revealed to Entertainment Weekly that he had conversations with Depp about reprising the role, noting that he thinks “he would do it,” though it would ultimately depend on the script.
For now, fans have to wait and watch for official confirmation.
