Jamie Lee Curtis has been ruling the entertainment industry for decades now. From Halloween to Freakier Friday, the veteran actress has enthralled audiences with her iconic performances. Curtis, who turned 67 in November, answered the burning retirement question that’s been on everyone’s mind in a recent interview.

In an interview, Jamie Lee Curtis opened up about her retirement plans. The actress’s statement shed light on her future in the world of cinema.

“I am done self-retiring. But no, of course I’ll retire,” Curtis told PEOPLE at the Tuesday, December 9 premiere of her new movie, Ella McCay, in Los Angeles. Curtis referenced her interview with Willie Geist on the Today show, where she joked that she’s “probably claimed retirement four times” already. The reference implied that she’s not new to hinting at quitting her acting career.

The interview saw the Halloween actress revealing the heartbreaking reason why she keeps considering retirement. “The context of that statement was I watched my parents, who loved this industry, who were mega stars. I’m a little minor twilight”, she said.

“They were mega, mega in their era,” she further explained, “and they were denied access to the very thing they loved to do, which was the movies, acting in the movies. And I watched both of them lose that life force because of aging and just getting older. They just didn’t have those opportunities, and it was heartbreaking.”

Curtis expressed her fear of history repeating itself and facing the same fate as her parents. “The whole reason I’ve talked about self-retiring is, I’m going to leave before you don’t ask me to come anymore,” the Freaky Friday actress shared.

“That’s the point. I’m going to step away before you no longer go, ‘Hey, Jamie, come here’. Because it’s too humiliating for me”, Curtis added. “And therefore I felt like I want to take advantage of the opportunities that I have and then always have one foot out the door”, she said.
