Prior to his untimely death, James Van Der Beek had conceptualized a reboot for Dawson’s Creek, according to the creator of the fan-favorite teen drama, Kevin Williamson. The creator of the Scream franchise opened up about potentially bringing back the 1998 series in a recent interview, revealing that Van Der Beek, who portrayed the titular character on the show, had a “beautiful plan” for a revival.
Kevin Williamson says James Van Der Beek ‘was going to write’ Dawson’s Creek reboot
While speaking with Esquire, Williamson disclosed that James Van Der Beek was quite enthusiastic about rebooting Dawson’s Creek and was even ready to pen the revival series.
“James and I talked about rebooting Dawson’s Creek several times,” the veteran filmmaker stated. “He wanted to do it. And, in fact, there was a moment where he was going to write it—and he had a really great idea for it. He had a beautiful plan. Then I think he got on a show, and everybody got busy. It never happened. But there was a lot of talk about it.”
Williamson also noted that discussions about the Dawson’s Creek reboot happened around 2016, “back when Vampire Diaries was still on the air.” However, nothing materialized as “Michelle Williams’ character was already gone. Four had already become three.”
Expanding upon Van Der Beek’s plan for the revival, the seasoned producer added, “I think it was a little along the lines of This Is Us. We envisioned it to have that kind of tone, because that was very popular at the time when we had been discussing it. So this [happened around] season 1 of that show.”
Despite James Van Der Beek’s eagerness to bring back the 90s classic, Williamson has “always been resistant to Dawson’s Creek. I always felt like, ‘Well, we did that. We finished it.’ In the last episode, we jumped five years. We went to the future. The last episode of that show was the remake. So I feel very okay with that. And I don’t feel the need to go back to that world, as much as I love them and would love to.”
While Williamson may not be on board for a traditional Dawson’s Creek reboot, he noted that the series could still continue “as a Broadway show.”
