James Gunn has debunked a viral Guardians of the Galaxy rumor.

Before launching the DCU at Warner Bros. Pictures with Peter Safran, Gunn directed all three of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies for Marvel Studios. The first film was released in 2014, while the second arrived in 2017 and the third in 2023.

What did James Gunn say about the Guardians of the Galaxy rumor?

On Threads, Gunn responded to a MCU rumor related to a scene involving Michael Rooker’s Yondu, Sean Gunn’s Kraglin, and Christopher Fairbank’s Broker character. The rumor claimed that Rooker went off script and improvised a number of lines, which then caused Gunn to break character.

Gunn said, “Nope. Both Yondu’s mocking and Kraglin suppressing a smile were scripted.”

He said in another post, “But what is true is I shot the closeup of Sean in pickups because I didn’t grab one on the day and I needed a cutaway. So he was actually in front of a blue screen for that shot and we comped in an empty plate of the background from the day. So, yeah, hardly ‘breaking character.’ When you hear about ‘reshoots’ these are usually the types of things my team is doing.”

When asked if he’s ever been in a situation where an actor truly does break character while filming, Gunn said, “All the time. We ruined takes laughing in Peacemaker nearly every day. But as far as I can remember I’ve never put it in a movie or show!”

All three of Marvel‘s Guardians of the Galaxy movies are available to stream on Disney+ at this time.

Gunn, meanwhile, is currently working on Man of Tomorrow for DC Studios. A follow-up to 2025’s Superman, the film, which arrives in United States theaters in July 2027, will see David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult reprise their respective roles as Clark Kent/Superman and Lex Luthor.
