James Gunn responded to growing speculation surrounding a set of highly realistic Green Lantern images that surfaced online. As questions circulated about their authenticity, Gunn stepped in to clarify their origin without offering specific details. His comment followed DC’s debut of the first Lanterns teaser at HBO Max’s São Paulo event.
James Gunn clarifies if two Green Lanterns’ photos are real
James Gunn confirmed that the circulating images depicting two Green Lanterns, Hal Jordan and John Stewart, using glowing green rings are not real. In response to a Threads post asking if the photos were authentic, Gunn replied directly, “Nope, that’s AI.”
The images prompted speculation among fans online, with several expressing how realistic they appeared. One user commented, “This looks so real and that’s insane,” while another stated, “I’m only going to trust images from you, the source!” These reactions reflect the high-quality realism of AI-generated visuals. Gunn’s response helped clarify misinformation about the series.
In official developments, DC revealed the first footage from the upcoming Lanterns series during the HBO Max upfront event in São Paulo, Brazil. Attendees confirmed that the teaser showed Hal Jordan and John Stewart working together, even though DC has not released the footage publicly. Brazilian outlet Omelete reported that the footage features Jordan temporarily stepping in to train Stewart, but it does not reveal whom Jordan is replacing.
The footage also references Green Lantern Corps member Ch’p, a squirrel-like alien from the planet H’lven. This confirms his presence in the new DC Universe. In the comics, Ch’p leads a resistance against Doctor Ub’x. He receives a Green Lantern ring from the Guardians and joins the Corps. His mention in the show highlights lesser-known Lantern lore.
In one scene, Stewart tells Jordan he’s better at saving people. Jordan then flies into the sky wearing regular clothes, with no costume or gear visible apart from the power ring. DC plans to release Lanterns after Supergirl in 2026.
