James Cameron has given a somewhat disappointing update to his Last Train From Hiroshima movie, revealing more about the upcoming and long-in-development project.
What’s the latest on James Cameron’s Last Train From Hiroshima?
Speaking during a recent appearance on The Town podcast with Matthew Belloni, Cameron spoke about the many projects he has in the works currently. One of those, The Last Train From Hiroshima, has gotten significant buzz over the past few years, which Cameron notes is a shame, as the film is not anywhere close to as done as reports made it seem.
“I have ten other projects, that one just sort of hit the headlines briefly because of the book announcement and trying to push the book to a best seller because the author is a friend of mine,” said Cameron, who did still note he has plans to make the movie.
“Doesn’t mean I’m not going to make the film, but I haven’t written the script and it’s not slated right now, and I don’t even have a distribution partner on it. So it’s a pretty much a vaporware project right now. I’ve got a couple of other projects that I’ve purchased or optioned or written.”
Cameron’s connection to a film adaptation of the book has been a long one. More than 10 years ago, in 2010, Cameron optioned the rights to make a film based on the book by Charles R. Pellegrino. Cameron said he hoped to film the movie prior to directing Avatar 4. However, the next entry to his Avatar franchise has already been partially filmed, with the rest to commence sometime after Avatar: Fire and Ash releases in December.
The novel documents life in both Hiroshima and Nagasaki during the times preceding, during, and following the aftermath of the atomic bombings of Japan by the United States. The story mainly focuses on various survivors of the bombings, including Tsutomu Yamaguchi, the only person who has been verified to have survived the impact of both attacks.
