James Cameron recently disclosed the timeline in which Avatar 4 takes place after Avatar: Fire and Ash. Since the debut of the first movie in 2009, Avatar has become a sprawling and vibrant fictional universe predominantly revolving around the Sully family. A considerable portion of the fourth movie has already been filmed, even though Avatar 3 is yet to be released.
James Cameron on when Avatar 4 takes place in the timeline
The Oscar-winning filmmaker revealed during an expansive interview about his career that there is an eight-year gap between the end of Avatar: Fire and Ash and the beginning of Avatar 4.
“All the actors worked for 18 months,” James Cameron initially detailed the extensive production schedules for the second and third movies to Vanity Fair. “This isn’t like rocking up to a lectern, and in two days, doing an entire voice part for an animated film, Pixar animated film. Everything you see those characters do, the actors did. It took 18 months to do the two movies. So, about nine months of capture for each film.”
The Titanic director continued, “But it was intermixed. We’d do Avatar 2 scene one day, and a [Avatar] 3 scene the next day. Even some stuff on 4. ‘Cause all the character jumped forward in age about eight years between the end of 3 and start of 4.”
Moreover, according to James Cameron, they decided to film those scenes for Avatar 4 because they knew that “the kids wouldn’t be kids anymore” when they resumed production. He stated that he didn’t know when they would film the remaining scenes. “We gotta make some money on the first three,” he added.
Notably, the first two Avatar movies are the highest and third highest-grossing movies of all time. Hence, it’s safe to assume that they have indeed made some money, and the remaining scenes will be filmed.
Avatar 4 is slated to arrive on December 21, 2029. However, before that, Avatar: Fire and Ash comes out in US theaters on December 19, 2025.
