With the It spin-off series Welcome to Derry tying up its narrative to align with the films in its finale, Finn Wolfhard has addressed the reveal and hinted at a potential return to the franchise in the future. Wolfhard, who portrayed one of the movie’s core protagonists, Richie Tozier, in 2017’s It, talked about Welcome to Derry’s surprise connection to his character before suggesting that he might just don the mantle again.
Finn Wolfhard teases involvement in a future It franchise project
While speaking with Esquire, the 23-year-old Canadian actor admitted that he was aware of the Richie reference made in Welcome to Derry Episode 8 from the get-go.
“I knew that years ago, actually,” Finn Wolfhard said of his character’s mention in the critically acclaimed It spinoff series before adding, “When they first started thinking about that show, it was probably 2021. Barbara and Andy Muschietti both told me, “You’re involved.” Yeah, I’m connected.”
The up-and-coming Hollywood star then teased a return to the fan-favorite horror franchise by stating, “I think there’s something else that will come up eventually that I’m excited for people to see.”
Notably, in the Season 1 finale of It: Welcome to Derry, Pennywise reveals that time works differently for him and that he is aware of the future where the Losers’ Club, including Wolfhard’s Richie, ends him for good. The evil clown even divulged that Marge (Matilda Lawler), full name Margaret Tozier, would go on to become the mother of Richie.
At the time of writing, HBO has yet to officially renew Welcome to Derry for a second season. Moreover, Finn Wolfhard has shied away from revealing the It project that could see him return as the quirky yet essential member of the Losers’ Club.
During the interview, Wolfhard also opened up about the difficulties of becoming a global star at a very young age, having become an integral part of the recently concluded Stranger Things series, along with the It franchise. “No one can prepare anyone for it. It was incredibly exciting. But there was a period in my teenage years where it was just hard,” he remarked.
