Netflix is moving ahead with Luther 2, bringing Idris Elba back as DCI John Luther while adding several high-profile actors from recent television hits. The upcoming film follows 2023’s Luther: The Fallen Sun, which performed strongly. Additional details are expected as production moves forward.

Anya Chalotra, Kyle Soller, and others join next Luther movie’s cast

Netflix is expanding the cast of Luther 2 with several high profile names. The next Luther feature film brings Stephen Dillane, Anya Chalotra, Kyle Soller, Ian Hart, and Niamh Algar into the franchise. They will join returning stars Idris Elba, who plays DCI John Luther; Ruth Wilson, who stars as Alice Morgan, and Dermot Crowley, who portrays DSU Martin Schenk, according to Deadline.

The film continues the crime saga after the success of Luther: The Fallen Sun. As of now, Netflix is keeping character specifics under wraps. However, the story is set to open with a new surge of violent and apparently random killings across London.

The narrative focuses on his attempt to stop the killings while facing threats from multiple sides. According to What’s on Netflix, production is scheduled to begin in London in February 2026, with filming expected to wrap in May.

Netflix confirmed in November 2025 that the film was officially moving forward. It once again unites series creator Neil Cross with director Jamie Payne, both of whom worked on the previous film.

Producing the movie are David Ready and Samantha Nisenboim for Chernin Entertainment, Cross, Elba, and Gina Carter for 22Summers, along with Tim Lewis. The film has not yet received an official title.

The announcement follows the strong performance of Luther: The Fallen Sun, which debuted in select cinemas on February 24, 2023. It arrived on Netflix on March 10, 2023. The film’s success on the platform led to plans for another installment in the franchise.
