ComingSoon is excited to debut a Hunting the Strange excerpt from Disney-Hyperion‘s upcoming mystery YA novel. The book is the sequel to Mystery Royale from author Kaitlyn Cavalancia. Featuring a more deadly mystery across its 416 pages, the book will be released on March 3, 2026.
“Mullory Prudence was supposed to die. Not only that, she was never supposed to inherit Xavier Stoutmire’s moody magic. But nothing about the Mystery Royale went according to plan. Now Mullory’s left with more questions than answers, the most pressing one being how to use her mother’s grave-defying shadow. And when her mother sends her on a dizzying scavenger hunt that spans everywhere from the Stoutmire estate (now all the more glamorous in its winter splendor) to a hidden magical corner of Coney Island, she’ll have to team up with unlikely allies to find her way,” says the official description.

Check out the Hunting the Strange excerpt from Chapter 26 below:
We climb.
And we climb.
Did I mention the snow? Falling into the hood of my jacket and sliding down my neck. Collecting on the steps that are already glistening with ice. I’m in pure survival mode, numb from the cold and the lack of sleep.
I hate that I can’t stop thinking of my mother, because I already thought I had her figured out, written off as a heartless monster. But a mysterious woman visited my mother and instructed her to surgically excise pieces of our dreams to watch over us. And my mother did just that.
But who was this woman?
Who could rival my mother’s dream magic enough to invade her mental fortress and save Lyric all those years ago?
“This is it,” Lyric announces a few steps ahead.
I drag my leaden legs up and across an alcove. A large wooden door is seamlessly fit into the stone. In the center the decaying remains of a crow are pinned down with a rusty nail. Its needle-point beak is a husk, and grisly bits of spoiled flesh cling like cheesecloth to the bones. Bile rises in my throat; the air is ripe with notes of rancid meat and rotting fruit.
Cruz—and his severe overconfidence—raps the knocker. “Hello. Anyone home?”
Slowly, the bones of the crow crunch as it turns its rotting head. There are no eyes, just sockets full of fat, feasting maggots, but I get the creeping sense that it’s looking straight at us. Through us.
The door creaks inward. Naturally, the door with the morbid skeleton knocker on an abandoned mountain would creak. How predictable.
Against my better judgment, we duck inside and follow a narrow tunnel carved through the mountainside. The gloom is as heavy as a thick mist, and our boots slap against the stone as we burrow farther in a single file, sheep to the slaughter. Faint light spills across a stony wall, nudging us to take a sharp right. We’re funneled into a cavernous room, the ceilings vaulted to dizzying heights. Rusted metal beams arc across the top; fitted between them are panes of beaded glass, fogged and streaked with a grimy film.
Something swoops past Mullory’s head and she ducks mid-shriek. Another crow, or rather the remains of a crow, caws past us. It’s a skeletal abomination, the bones mashed together at odd joints so that the wings are uneven and its flight choppy. No eyes in this one either, but it tips its head from side to side, a disturbingly watchful gesture.
With a quick sulfur pinch of kerosene, flames catch on a row of lanterns handing from the rafters, flooding the space with warm light. There’s a snap, snap, snap, the creaking of sleeping joints being cracked into place. Bone grinding against bone. Tucked in every corner and perched on the beams are thousands of these skeletal crows. Roused by our presence, their misshapen skulls swivel at odd angles, joints backward and lopsided.
None of us say a thing. Not even the grand master, the classically trained pianist himself, makes a peep.
Eyes adjusting to the light, I notice piles of metal, several feet tall and stacked in every corner. Mullory picks off a piece, revealing on old, rusted key. One of the crows nips angrily at her ankles and she tosses it back. There must be thousands of these antique keys, protected by their dead guardians.
“Why so many keys?” asks Lyric.
Mullory approaches the back wall, a slab of stone that easily reaches thirty feet, speckled with holes, like Swiss cheese. She runs her hand from hole to hole. “Because one of them fits, one of them leads to a door.”
“Well, we can’t try them all.” I state the obvious.
“We don’t need to.” Mullory points to a message painted on the stone. “We just need to solve that.”
Keys that bite, keys that lock.
Keys that shut, keys that flock.
More than one, a murder you get.
Find the right key, or take a bet.
What makes a key, is it metal or bone?
Will you call in the dead to bring it home?
