The upcoming gritty adventure The Death of Robin Hood starring Hugh Jackman has received a very positive Rotten Tomatoes prediction. The A24 film, which will be releasing on July 19 in the US, is directed by Michael Sarnoski, who is known for the 2021 Nicolas Cage drama Pig and the 2024 apocalyptic horror film A Quiet Place: Day One. In contrast to the 2018 action-adventure Robin Hood led by Taron Egerton and Jamie Foxx, this reinterpretation of the folk hero is far darker and more realistic to the legend’s 12th-century medieval time period. The film follows an aging, heavily bearded Robin Hood (Hugh Jackman) who is critically injured in a fight but is healed by a mysterious woman (Jodie Comer).

The A24 film The Death of Robin Hood is expected to earn a high 88% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, as based on a bet on Kalshi (as of June 5). The full results of the market are as follows:

- Above 50 – 94%
- Above 55 – 97%
- Above 60 – 91%
- Above 65 – 92%

This predicted score has steadily improved over the last two weeks. At the beginning of the bet on May 24, the estimated RT score for the film was lower at an 82%. But it has been pushed higher since the start of June to a range between 84% and 93%. As such, it’s important to take this prediction with a grain of salt, since it can fluctuate wildly.
Still, so long as this holds, The Death of Robin Hood will likely receive Certified Fresh status, which is given to films with a 75% or higher rating on Rotten Tomatoes given enough reviews from top critics. It’s unclear what the review embargo for the film will be, though with a prediction like this, it would behoove A24 to let positive word-of-mouth spread from high reviews as early as possible.
That said, it will be tough for The Death of Robin Hood to contend with the sheer number of early summer blockbusters coming out in June, particularly against Toy Story 5 that comes out on the same day as it does. The hope is that this gritty interpretation of the oft-romanticized hero will not be overlooked and be able to stand out against the likes of Disclosure Day, Scary Movie 6, and Supergirl.
The stiff competition has impacted the box office forecast for the film’s domestic start, which is between $7 million and $10 million based on a June 5 report by BoxOffice Pro. A separate analysis from BoxOfficeTheory is slightly higher at $8 million to $13 million. It’s uncertain, though, what the production budget is for The Death of Robin Hood yet, so it’s difficult to say at this point whether the movie is on track to break even or not.
Set photos and trailers for the film have surprised fans of Hugh Jackman for his nearly unrecognizable look as Robin Hood. Some have compared his lengthy white beard and hair to his grizzled appearance in Logan and Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher. A trailer narrated by Jackman reminds audiences that Robin Hood was “portrayed as a famous cutthroat” in the earliest tellings of his story and that the hero “tracks the Sheriff of Nottingham, fells him with an arrow, and takes his head with a sword.” That why the film positions the figure “as an aging recluse in the throes of a life governed by fighting and stealing to survive.”
