Stellan Skarsgård’s role in his latest movie, Sentimental Value, is seemingly in the running for a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the Oscars. Notably, if the actor does get nominated, he could accomplish a feat that has never been achieved in the awards’ history.
Stellan Skarsgård can create Oscars history with Sentimental Value
Sentimental Value, also known as Affeksjonsverdi, is a Norwegian movie. It garnered massive critical acclaim since its premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. Many now believe that Skarsgård’s performance could earn him a Best Supporting Actor nomination in the upcoming Academy Awards.
While that is a well-deserved first nomination for the Chernobyl actor, it would also be the first time in the awards’ history that a performance from a non-English language movie (produced outside of the U.S.) has been recognized in this category. Although the final list of nominees has not been revealed yet, the veteran holds a strong chance.
For context, the Academy Awards introduced both the Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress categories in 1936. The Best Supporting Actress category, along with several others, has included and awarded performances from international films. In contrast, the Best Supporting Actor category has never received even a single nomination.
So, if the Andor star does make it to the list, it would undoubtedly be a historic achievement. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will reveal the full list of nominations on Thursday, January 22, 2026.
Directed by Joachim Trier, Sentimental Value explores the strained relationship between Gustav (Skarsgård), a film director, and his two daughters, Nora (Renate Reinsve) and Agnes (Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas). The movie also stars Elle Fanning as Rachel Kemp, a young Hollywood star who forms an unlikely bond with Gustav.
The movie premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival on 21 May. It later screened at other festivals throughout the year. It will arrive in the United States on December 26, 2025.
