The third and final season of The Summer I Turned Pretty wrapped up, and the finale gave Belly and Conrad a romantic reunion, but not everyone was sold on how the show chose to end it. Readers of Jenny Han’s books immediately noticed that the series went in a different direction than the books, and the change left some feeling bittersweet.
How The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3’s ending is different from books
In Season 3, The Summer I Turned Pretty’s finale leaned into subtlety rather than grand gestures. Belly and Conrad confessed their feelings on the train, kissed, and eventually made their way back to Cousins Beach. The closing scene showed them hand in hand at the beloved beach house, with a scrapbook montage teasing their holiday in Paris. It was tender and romantic, but it stopped short of offering the “happily ever after” readers expected.
In Jenny Han’s We’ll Always Have Summer, though, Belly and Conrad’s love story doesn’t just rekindle — it solidifies. The book closes with their wedding, complete with a dress picked out with her mom, a first dance to “Stay,” and a heartfelt letter from Susannah written years earlier for Belly’s big day. The book gives fans complete closure, including Conrad’s love letters and Jeremiah attending the wedding, which the show skipped altogether.
The difference in tone explains why reactions were so mixed. As one fan wrote on Twitter, “Finished the finale and had a great time but the ending felt incomplete like no running into the water? no valentines day flashback? and no scenes with anybody else for belly?”
However, Prime Video has already confirmed TSITP: The Movie, written and directed by Jenny Han herself. While details are under wraps, Han hinted that Belly still has “one big milestone” ahead. This has fans buzzing about whether the long-awaited Belly and Conrad wedding will finally make its way to screens.
