A recent update from a cast member has revealed that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the upcoming Game of Thrones spin-off, will be kid-friendly, deviating from the trend set by the original show and its first spin-off, House of the Dragon. The latest reports also hint that the overall tone of the new spin-off will vary significantly from both the earlier George R.R. Martin adaptations.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms said to be safe for kids to watch
On the heels of the successful adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire into Game of Thrones, HBO adapted his spin-off novel, Fire and Blood, to create House of the Dragon.
Now, the network is presenting another Game of Thrones prequel, based on the author’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas. However, this time, the tone of the series, as well as its target audience, will be different.
While both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon were rated MA, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be kid-friendly. As per ScreenRant, Dexter Sol Ansell, who plays Egg in the show, confirmed this at the recently concluded CCXP.
Ansell explained that he filmed the show when he was nine years old, and the storylines felt appropriate for someone his age. “Kids like me can watch A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” the now 11-year-old actor said.
The outlet further stated that there will also be a tonal shift in the new spinoff. Both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon relied heavily on graphic depictions of violence and nudity. Meanwhile, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be much more light-hearted, thematically distinct, and character-centric.
The second Game of Thrones spin-off series centers around Ser Duncan the Tall (played by Peter Claffey). A squire who journeys to become a knight, he soon comes across a bald child named Egg. The two form an unlikely bond and set off on an adventure together.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms takes place approximately 100 years before the events of Game of Thrones. This means it is set about 100 years after House of the Dragon, as well. The series also stars Finn Bennett, Bertie Carvel, Tanzyn Crawford, Daniel Ings, and Sam Spruell.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will premiere on HBO Max on January 18, 2026.
