In an interview with Deadline, HBO Chairman Casey Bloys addressed George R.R. Martin’s claim that his relationship with House of the Dragon co-creator Ryan Condal had become “abysmal.” Bloys said, “Like any good American family, I would prefer that our dysfunction stays behind closed doors. But here we are.” He affirmed that Martin introduced Condal to HBO and emphasized, “Ryan has been an excellent showrunner and a really great partner and collaborator.”
Bloys confirmed HBO maintains an overall deal with Martin and values him as “the architect of this world.” On Martin’s involvement in Season 3, Bloys stated, “He definitely took a step back” and “has been focusing on Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.” He added that the project mattered because Martin had long identified it as his favorite.
Martin, in a separate interview with The Hollywood Reporter, said his working relationship with Condal deteriorated during Season 2. “Then we got into season two, and he basically stopped listening to me,” Martin claimed. He recalled a final turning point in a Zoom meeting when he said, “This is not my story any longer.” According to Martin, HBO later asked him to submit his notes through them instead of directly to Condal.
Martin originally hired Condal and collaborated closely through Season 1. “I thought Ryan and I were partners,” Martin said. Condal has not issued a new statement, but previously called Martin a “literary icon” and expressed hope they could “rediscover that harmony someday.”
Despite the tensions, Bloys expressed creative satisfaction with the series: “I’m thrilled with what Ryan has done, he’s been a great collaborator with us.” He also noted House of the Dragon has an 87% Rotten Tomatoes score for its first two seasons.
