According to one HBO executive, the upcoming Harry Potter TV show will be the “streaming event of the decade.”

Why did HBO say about the Harry Potter TV Show?

On Monday, Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming boss, JB Perrette, announced the launch date for HBO Max in the UK and Ireland. During the event, Perrette spoke about Harry Potter, one of the upcoming television adaptations of the beloved novels. Perrette, who recently visited the set, spoke about how the size and magnitude of the production make it one of the company’s biggest and most important projects.

“The scope of the production, the detail, meticulousness of what they’re going through and what they’ve built takes theatrical to just a whole different level,” Perrette said via Variety. “And so when you think of the love of that franchise and what you can do in a series — can go deeper, an tell more of the story, can tell more of the pieces that you didn’t get to capture in a two hour movie – Casey [Bloys, HBO Max boss] doesn’t like it when I say this, but I’m gonna say it anyway. I really think this is the streaming event of the decade.”

Harry Potter is billed as a “faithful adaptation” of the book series by author and executive producer J.K. Rowling. “Each season will bring Harry Potter and these incredible adventures to new audiences around the world, while the original, classic, and cherished films will remain at the core of the franchise and available to watch globally,” the official series’ description reads.

Dominic McLaughlin stars as Harry Potter, with Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. Additional cast members include John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.

Francesca Gardiner is the showrunner and executive producer. Mark Mylod will executive produce and direct multiple episodes. Additional executive producers include Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, and David Heyman. Filming is now underway at Leavesden Studios.

Harry Potter will premiere on HBO in 2027.
