Lin-Manuel Miranda has announced his next directorial project: a movie based on a beloved musical.

What musical is Lin-Manuel Miranda going to direct?

Miranda is set to direct a feature film adaptation of Octet, an a cappella musical about the dangers of internet addiction. From playwright and composer Dave Malloy, Octet premiered Off-Broadway in 2019.

“I’ve been obsessed since I saw Annie Tippe’s production in November 2019, and working on adapting this with Dave for the past six years,” Miranda said in an Instagram post. “Now we get to make the movie.”

“I am over the moon that Lin-Manuel is turning Octet into a movie!” Malloy said in a statement. “I was utterly gobsmacked by his work on tick, tick…Boom!, and feel so honored to have such a beacon of the musical theatre world bring this piece into a new life. As a brilliant storyteller, fellow internet junkie, and dear friend, I know he’s going to make something amazing. And our cast is completely ridiculous.”

Set in a church basement, Octet follows eight internet addicts in a support group who share their struggles. No casting announcements have been made. Malloy will write the screenplay and serve as an executive producer.

Julie Oh, who joins Miranda’s 5000 Broadway Productions, will produce the film alongside John Skidmore for Best Kept Secret Productions and Luis A. Miranda, Jr. Johnny Holland, Owen Panettieri, and Diana DiMenna are executive producers. Additional executive producers and financers include Sander Jacobs, Caren Jacobs, TodayTix Group, Jeffrey Seller, Teresa Tsai, and John Gore for Broadway.com.

Miranda is best known for creating the Tony Award-winning musicals In the Heights and Hamilton. As a director, Octet marks Miranda’s follow-up to the feature film adaptation of Tick, Tick… Boom! Released in 2021, Tick, Tick… Boom! garnered positive reviews and received two Oscar nominations: Best Actor (Andrew Garfield) and Best Film Editing.
