A24’s latest movie, How to Make a Killing, is out this week and stars Glen Powell, but has been receiving mixed reviews when reception for the film began coming out.
What are the How to Make a Killing reviews saying?
On Rotten Tomatoes, the upcoming movie debuted with a 51% score, a surprising low for a movie starring Powell and other stars. While many praised Powell in the movie, most reviews criticized the film’s lack of thrills and comedy throughout the movie.
USA Today’s Brian Truitt noted the film finds “a nice blend of heroic and dastardly, plus a smart coda, “Killing” does a good enough job as a watchable piece full of nasty comeuppance.” Houston Chronicle’s Cary Darling finds it somewhat less than thrilling and a darkly hued comedy that’s not as funny as it thinks it is,” and AV Club’s Jacob Oller noted the movie has “simple observations” and is “predictable.”
On the positive site, Slant Magazine’s Alexander Mooney noted director “John Patton Ford cultivates an old-school flair while keeping one finger on the pulse of the current moment.” Variety’s Owen Gleiberman also said “the film’s acrid riffs on the hidden depravity of the new greed culture keep it aloft.”
“The film follows Becket Redfellow (Powell), heir to a multibillion-dollar fortune, who will stop at nothing to get what he deserves … or what he thinks he deserves,” a description of the movie reads.
Alongside Powell, How to Make a Killing also stars Margaret Qualley, Ed Harris, Jessica Henwick, Zach Woods, Topher Grace, Raff Law, and Bill Camp. Loosely based on 1949’s Kind Hearts and Coronets by Robert Hamer, Huntington is written and directed by John Patton Ford, who previously made 2022’s Emily the Criminal with Aubrey Plaza.
The film, which has been in development since 2024, recently went through a name change. Previously titled Huntington, How to Make a Killing’s new name was recently reported after trailers of the film began popping up. It’s unclear why the film’s old name was changed.
