George Clooney recalled a past movie audition where a famous director’s response to it upset him. In a recent interview, the actor touched upon his terrible experience auditioning for a role in Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Francis Ford Coppola’s reaction to his audition. Coppola directed the film, based on Stoker’s 1897 novel, from a screenplay written by James V. Hart.
George Clooney recalls his ‘terrible’ audition for Bram Stoker’s Dracula
At Jay Kelly’s red carpet premiere, George Clooney looked back to when he auditioned for a role in Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
“I had a terrible audition for — and this will make you laugh — Francis Ford Coppola,” the Syriana actor told Entertainment Weekly. Clooney recalled believing that his audition went great and asking his agent how he performed. He shared that his agent told him Coppola thought he was “drunk” during his audition. “Which I was not, but that cuts,” he added. “That hurt.” Clooney revealed that he was “very relaxed” at the time of his audition as he had taken Percodan.
Ultimately, Clooney didn’t land a part in Bram Stoker’s Dracula. However, the film featured Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder, Anthony Hopkins, Keanu Reeves, Cary Elwes, Richard E. Grant, and Sadie Frost.
The ER alum had previously recalled the experience in 2016. At the time, he claimed he took the method-acting route and became drunk during the audition to try and land the part of a drunk character.
Bram Stoker’s Dracula was a financial success, grossing $215.8 million against a budget of $40 million. The film was nominated in four categories at the Oscars. It was nominated for Best Costume Design, Best Sound Editing, Best Makeup, and Best Art Direction, winning the former three.
The film’s story is set in 19th-century England and Romania. It follows the title character, who falls in love with Mina Murray — the fiancée of his solicitor, Jonathan Harker — believing she is the reincarnation of his wife, Elisabeta. Dracula soon starts causing problems for Mina’s friends, prompting vampire expert Abraham Van Helsing to step in and stop him.
