It is difficult to imagine General Hospital without Sonny Corinthos, a role Maurice Benard has played for 33 years. However, Benard has begun considering what he might do once Sonny’s story eventually comes to an end. In a recent podcast appearance, he discussed his plans.

Maurice Benard reveals his plans after retiring from General Hospital

Maurice Benard has portrayed Sonny Corinthos for 33 years. The character has become one of the most recognizable figures in daytime television. At some point, however, the run will conclude, and Sonny will leave Port Charles.

During a recent episode of the State of Mind podcast, Benard spoke about his plans after his time on General Hospital comes to a close. The topic arose while he was speaking with Kelly Thiebaud about her original exit from the show and her recent return.

Thiebaud shared that she began taking acting classes in her 20s and continues to attend them. Benard then asked, “So you’ll come to my class?” He was referring to his interest in teaching acting in the future, drawing on his decades of experience. “I will be. I’m going to do it when I leave GH,” he said, confirming his intention to pursue acting mentorship.

“Oh boy,” Thiebaud replied. She then asked whether he wanted to elaborate. Benard responded, “Not yet…I gotta wait.”

Sonny Corinthos first appeared on August 13, 1993. Since his debut, the character has been central to many major storylines on General Hospital. Over the years, Benard has received multiple Daytime Emmy nominations, including for Outstanding Lead Actor.

For now, Sonny remains a key presence in Port Charles.
