The legal feud between rapper Eminem and The Real Housewives of Potomac stars Gizelle Bryant and Robyn Dixon has drawn widespread attention. This started over the name of Bryant and Dixon’s podcast, Reasonably Shady. Now, many are curious about what happened.
Eminem and Gizelle Bryant’s lawsuit explained
A surprising trademark battle has started between rapper Eminem and Real Housewives of Potomac stars Gizelle Bryant and Robyn Dixon. The dispute began when Bryant and Dixon attempted to trademark their podcast, Reasonably Shady, which they launched in 2021.
Eminem, whose stage names include “Slim Shady” and “Shady,” objected to their trademark filing in early 2023, claiming it could cause confusion among consumers and potentially impact his long-established brand. He’s held the rights to “Shady” for entertainment and merchandising purposes since 1998.
Bryant and Dixon’s legal team asserted there was no potential for consumer confusion. According to the request, “Robyn Dixon and Gizelle Bryant deny any likelihood of confusion between Mather’s trademarks and their Reasonably Shady mark…We are prepared to defend any allegations against them regarding their intellectual property.” (via Page Six)
The situation escalated when the women’s legal team demanded Eminem’s in-person appearance in court. Meanwhile, Eminem’s lawyers filed a protective order against their request, claiming that it was unreasonable. The issue was complicated further by the fact that Bryant and Dixon had already been deposed in a previous case involving Eminem. They argued that since they had complied with similar legal demands, it was only fair that Eminem should do the same.
The case took another turn when the United States Patent and Trademark Office Board sided with Eminem. It ruled that the Real Housewives stars had not provided sufficient evidence to justify requiring the rapper’s deposition. The board concluded that Eminem’s manager, Paul Rosenberg, could represent his interests in the case.
Talking about the case, Bryant said, “I find it to be foolishness. I want it to be over, for sure.” (via PEOPLE)
