Square Enix continues its recent trend of Dragon Quest remakes with Dragon Quest VII Reimagined being the latest. The reimagining label is apt, as this is adapting one of the more divisive Dragon Quest games, one that is quite long and takes a while to get going in its original form. Featuring a much more streamlined opening, plus changes to the story and battle system, Square Enix has carefully updated the game to be the best version of Dragon Quest VII that it can be today, rather than being faithful to a fault.
As mentioned, one of the biggest complaints about the original Dragon Quest VII was how long it took to get going. In particular, it used to take hours to get off the initial island and even to battle your first slime. Thankfully, Dragon Quest VII’s time-travelling adventure sets off much quicker in this version, allowing you to get right into the action. This updated pacing, which is aided by the ability for the game to guide you where you need to go and get recaps of the story so far, helps the game immensely.
My favorite change to the game is that enemies now appear on the overworld map as you traverse the various islands. Not only does this allow you to choose when to get into battles, but it also adds a Persona-like action element where you can gain a small advantage by attacking them before they spot you. Weaker foes will even die instantly, ensuring you don’t waste your time fighting needless battles. This is indicative of DQVIIR’s overall philosophy, which is taking a look at nearly every element of the game and finding small tweaks to make it a more rewarding and updated experience.
As with any Dragon Quest game, a lot of the joy comes from its traditional turn-based battle system and the wonderful enemy designs. Auto-battles are now available, which is perfect for grinding, and there are quite a few options ranging from focusing on healing to going all-out and not worrying about MP use. However, the biggest tweaks are that there are new spells and abilities that your party members can use, which is useful since the monsters have also been given buffs and a better intelligence, so the battles are more thrilling than ever.
All of the enemies you fight and the islands you explore look fantastic, and the remake has a very unique art style that is reminiscent of looking down at a diorama. It manages to stay true to Akira Toriyama’s signature style, which also gives a charming new aesthetic. I much prefer its visuals to the previous 3DS remake, and the overall presentation has been given an impressive overhaul as it features a ton of fully-voiced cutscenes.
There are plenty of other small changes that help make one of the traditionally weaker Dragon Quest games worth another look. For example, dungeons are now a much more fulfilling experience with some pretty tricky puzzles added into the mix, so it won’t be entirely about just steamrolling past enemies. New difficulty modes, the ability to moonlight vocations, and getting to engage in a challenging battle arena make sure veteran players will get a fresh experience.
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined Review: Final Verdict
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is exactly what I want from a remake. The game’s core is left intact, with its story of adventure and making a difference still resonating today, but nearly all of its frustrating qualities have been filed down. Featuring a gorgeous art style, a revamped battle system, and some stellar quality-of-life changes, this is now the definitive version of Dragon Quest VII that I’ll always go back to in the future.
SCORE: 9/10
As ComingSoon’s review policy explains, a score of 9 equates to “Excellent.” Entertainment that reaches this level is at the top of its type. The gold standard that every creator aims to reach.
