David Corenswet recently sat down for a conversation with Jonathan Bailey, discussing their latest films and what life as an actor is like. During the conversation, Corenswet spoke about the one time he overruled James Gunn during the filming of an iconic scene from Superman. The candid exchange offered fans a rare glimpse behind the scenes of Hollywood’s creative process.
James Gunn wanted David Corenswet to be more ‘solemn’ in last Superman scene with Lois Lane
In conversation with Jonathan Bailey during Variety’s Actors on Actors, David Corenswet spoke about his experience on the sets of Superman, in which he played the leading role of Clark Kent/Superman.
As the duo discussed a scene from Bailey’s latest release, Wicked: For Good, Bailey mentioned a detail about Corenswet’s kissing scene towards the end of Superman, calling it his “favorite moment of chemistry.”
He mentioned the slight chuckle on Superman’s face when Lois Lane confesses her love for the man who saved the day. Responding to this, Corenswet revealed director James Gunn’s views on Corenswet’s improvisation of the scene, saying, “I think, and James might correct me when we go to shoot the sequel, I was doing that chuckle, I was laughing, and in that moment at the end when she (Lois) says, ‘I love you too,’ he came up to me and said, ‘It’s not working.'”
Corenswet explained how Gunn told him that the scene “needs to be solemn.” He then shared, “And I was like, ‘No, no, no—the whole point is: I f—— know that you love me.’ Credit to James if I’m right, he was right on 90% of everything. But on that one he saw that, that chuckle was a very truthful thing.” Bailey then added, “And when you’re in this huge film like Superman, the fact that you grounded it in those moments… that is what makes a leading man smash it out of the park.”
