In the build-up to the upcoming Street Fighter movie, Joey Ansah, who co-developed, co-wrote, and directed the criminally underrated Assassin’s Fist miniseries, has revealed that he had actually planned a fleshed-out sequel for his 2014 show. Ansah, a lifelong Street Fighter fan, went as far as to say that his follow-up idea had the potential to turn into a Game of Thrones-level series, only for creative and corporate disputes to lead to its scrapping.
Joey Ansah says Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist could’ve become a ‘Game of Thrones-size TV show’
During a recent conversation, The Bourne Ultimatum star confirmed that he had composed a 120-page treatment for Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist’s sequel series. Subtitled World Warrior, the show would’ve focused on the crime organization run by perennial Street Fighter villain, M. Bison, along with his infamous World Warrior martial arts tournament.
Joey Ansah told Dexerto that he had already charted out the first two seasons of Street Fighter: World Warrior. In an ideal world, the debut chapter of the series would’ve introduced viewers to the Street Fighter I tournament, with characters like Geki and Gen taking center stage. Meanwhile, Season 2 would’ve finally explored Bison’s World Warrior tournament.
While the proposed Street Fighter series initially attracted several high-profile showrunners, their creative designs for the show ultimately clashed with Ansah’s and Capcom’s vision. With the licensing deal between Capcom and certain studios also reaching a stalemate, they ulimately scrapped World Warrior.
“In hindsight, after Assassin’s Fist, it should have been, ‘We’ll make this for the lowest potential TV budget that exists, but as long as I have the creative control…’ and then if that was a success, then eventually people will throw money at you if you’re proving yourself. We had the opportunity to go from Assassin’s Fist to the biggest Game of Thrones-size TV show,” Ansah remarked.
While it remains unclear if Joey Ansah’s vision for a dark and gritty Street Fighter series will ever come to fruition, he already has a backup plan to share his story with the world. “If this thing never gets made, I’ll release it one day. Either I’ll just release the treatment out into the ether, or maybe I’ll maybe do a thing with Capcom to get Udon to turn my treatment into a graphic novel,” Ansah said.
