Sony Pictures‘ upcoming 28 Years Later 3 movie has finally received an interesting update about the next installment’s potential release. This comes over two months after the studio revealed that a new sequel was now in the works, with Academy Award winner Cillian Murphy attached to reprise his role from the first installment.

What’s the new update for 28 Years Later 3?

According to World of Reel, Sony Pictures is reportedly not rushing to make the follow-up sequel to 2026’s 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple movie. Despite receiving high praise from critics, the latest sequel to Danny Boyle’s iconic horror franchise wasn’t able to capture the attention of moviegoers. During its initial theatrical run, the film underperformed at the box office by only earning a worldwide gross of over $57 million against its reported budget of around $63 million.

The outlet’s sources claimed that Netflix is reportedly showing interest in acquiring 28 Years Later 3. However, this idea was supposedly shut down by Boyle, who wants a theatrical release for the final installment of his trilogy. Should this rumor be proven, it would mean that it would take a long while before the next 28 Years Later sequel makes its way to the theaters.

28 Years Later 3 will reportedly be co-written by franchise scribe Alex Garland and Boyle. At the moment, it has no official director attached to it yet, but Boyle previously expressed his interest in directing the final installment to his 28 Years Later trilogy. Further details about its plot and characters are still under wraps, but The Bone Temple director Nia DaCosta recently revealed that the mystery about Samson potentially getting cured from the Rage Virus will be explored more in the third movie.

“This is so interesting because there’s going to be a third movie,” she said. “I was talking to Alex about it last night, and I don’t want to say anything that might need to be retconned because I have strong opinions about how I approached it for this movie. But I think I’m good to say that he’s not fully cured, and the level that he is healed is permanent. He’s not what he was [at the start of the movie], but is he one of us? I don’t know. But he’s not what he was.”
