After months of uncertainty surrounding 28 Years Later 3, Cillian Murphy has provided an encouraging update. The actor recently hinted that the third chapter remains in development. This has eased concerns that surfaced earlier this year about the sequel’s chances of coming to fruition.
Cillian Murphy reveals status of 28 Years Later 3
Cillian Murphy has offered an optimistic update on the future of the 28 Years Later trilogy. The actor addressed the project while speaking to The Times in connection with his upcoming film Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, offering insight into where the next chapter currently stands.
According to the publication, the third film remains in the planning phase. When asked directly whether the project is likely to proceed, Murphy stated, “Hope so! I’m ready anyway.” His comments suggest a willingness to return, even as the studio has yet to provide a formal production timeline.
The third installment was previously approved ahead of the theatrical release of 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, the second film in the new trilogy from director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland. However, since the sequel’s theatrical debut, Sony Pictures has not publicly outlined the next steps for the franchise.
Earlier this year, World of Reel indicated that Sony Pictures was not moving quickly on the third film after 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple underperformed at the box office. Despite receiving positive reviews, the sequel reportedly earned just over $57 million worldwide against a reported $63 million budget.
According to the same publication, Netflix had expressed interest in acquiring the next chapter. However, that possibility did not move forward, with director Danny Boyle reportedly favoring a traditional theatrical release for the final film in the trilogy.
While no official production date has been announced, Murphy’s remarks provide a more hopeful tone surrounding the project’s future.
