A 2016 sci-fi movie, starring Chris Pratt, is arriving on Hulu later this month. The space romance film follows a man in desperate need of companionship who prematurely awakens one of his fellow passengers from hibernation during their interstellar journey.
Passengers begins streaming on Hulu in February
2016’s Passengers will stream on Hulu, starting Saturday, February 28, 2026.
Oscar-nominated director Morten Tyldum helmed the movie with an original screenplay by Jon Spaihts. The movie stars Chris Pratt as Jim Preston and Jennifer Lawrence as Aurora Lane. It also features appearances from Michael Sheen, Laurence Fishburne, and Andy Garcia.
Set in the future, Passengers follows a group of humans traveling aboard the spacecraft Avalon on an interstellar journey to colonize a distant planet. However, when an asteroid hits the ship, it malfunctions, and Jim (Pratt) is accidentally woken up with 90 years left in the journey. After spending a year in isolation, he makes the difficult decision to wake up another passenger, Aurora (Lawrence).
The movie premiered in cinemas on December 21, 2016. Upon release, it received mixed-to-negative reviews from critics. On the other hand, it received a more favorable reception from the audience, which ultimately worked in the movie’s favor. It earned more than $303 million worldwide.
Currently, Passengers has a 30% Tomatometer score based on 287 reviews and a 63% Popcornmeter score based on over 50,000 user ratings on Rotten Tomatoes.
Spaihts originally wrote the screenplay in 2007, with Keanu Reeves reportedly rumored to star at one point. Furthermore, Emily Blunt, Reese Witherspoon, and Rachel McAdams were also considered for the role of Aurora. However, the movie was stuck in development hell until Sony Pictures Entertainment acquired the rights in 2014.
Brian Kirk was initially set to direct before Tyldum took over in 2015, and the lead roles ultimately went to Pratt and Lawrence around the same time. Additionally, the pop-rock band Imagine Dragons recorded “Levitate” for the movie.
