Ben Stiller recently took to social media to demand that the U.S. government take down a video it used that featured clips from his 2008 movie Tropic Thunder.
What did Ben Stiller say about The White House using a clip of his movie?
In a recent post on X, Stiller was outraged over a clip that the official White House account shared. In the montage, captioned “Justice the American way,” a variety of clips from movies, TV shows, and even video games can be shown amidst clips of missiles being dropped onto various targets.
Among movies like John Wick, Superman, Iron Man 2, Braveheart, and more, Stiller’s Tropic Thunder can be seen a few times, specifically the parts that include Tom Cruise’s surprise cameo and his character, Les Grossman, dancing. Stiller — who directed and starred in the movie — demanded the post be taken down, and said he never gave any permission for it to be used, while admonishing their use of media to promote war.
“Hey White House, please remove the Tropic Thunder clip. We never gave you permission and have no interest in being a part of your propaganda machine. War is not a movie,” wrote Stiller.
Stiller is far from the first celebrity to have taken umbrage with the fact that the White House or an account affiliated with the U.S. government used their content. In the past, stars like Sabrina Carpenter and Billie Eilish have also criticized social media posts for using their songs for videos that included things like ICE raids and more.
