Directed by veteran filmmaker Spike Jonze, this new Super Bowl ad saw Ben Stiller team up with Benson Boone, an experience the Zoolander star said he thoroughly enjoyed. The ad also featured two teasers at the start that established the tense relationship between Gary (Stiller) and John (Boone).
One of the more interesting things about the retro-themed commercial was Ben Stiller’s voice. The actor explained it in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly. “Well, I don’t think I ever settled on the voice,” Stiller told EW when asked how he settled on the voice he used. “We’re not quite sure where these guys are from, and sometimes when you’re working on an accent, you’re trying to make it very specific, but I think our goal was to make it incredibly nonspecific and inconsistent.”
Speaking about working with Boone, Stiller further added, “That guy is incredible. I loved him. First of all, he’s so talented. He’s got such a great, open attitude towards trying something new. I don’t think he’s done a lot of acting, and he just jumped into the improv, and he just has this incredible ability to put himself out there in his musical talent, his physical abilities, and his willingness to kind of go and have fun.”
He continued, “To me, it was just such a blast to work with him. And as I said, we started to improvise together, and I’d never met him before, so it was really fun to see that he had that skill and was really into just kind of going for it.”
The advertisement has drawn reactions on social media platforms and YouTube. Many viewers appeared impressed by the commercial, with some calling it the best one of the year.
