Marvel fans are questioning the future of Avengers: Doomsday following a major update tied to Dune: Part 3’s theatrical rollout. After confirmation of a key release detail, some viewers believe the December box office clash may not unfold as originally planned.
Avengers: Doomsday and Dune 3 fans think Dunesday may not last
Dune: Part 3 has secured an exclusive IMAX window for its opening weekend on December 18, 2026, the same day Avengers: Doomsday debuts in theaters.
According to DiscussingFilm, that agreement means Doomsday will only have select international markets for potential IMAX screenings. ComicBook.com reported, “So far, Dunesday is still a go for December 18, but you’ll only be able to watch one half of your double feature on an IMAX screen.”
By securing IMAX exclusivity, Dune: Part 3 gains a premium format advantage for its opening weekend. IMAX screenings generate higher ticket prices and market the film as an enhanced theatrical experience. Both studios have scheduled their films for release on December 18, 2026, setting up a direct box office clash.
Online reactions referenced the IMAX situation and potential schedule adjustments. One user wrote, “Disney needs to swallow their pride and move doomsday back to may, releasing an Avengers movie without IMAX is like buying a Ferrari and driving it in a school zone.”
Another user stated, “Yeah move up the Avengers to around Thanksgiving.”
Additional comments addressed release timing preferences. One user said, “I understand them wanting to try and avengers movie during the holidays but spring time was perfect it felt like I personally would rather them keep a late April to early May release date.” Other users focused on format preferences, including, “even though im more excited to see doomsday, I’d rather see dune in imax.”
Discussion also touched on production formats. One user commented, “Well Dune is actually shot in IMAX, all marvel movies are shot digitally iirc.” Another wrote, “Dolby is better than imax lol who cares.”
Both Dune: Part 3 and Avengers: Doomsday remain scheduled for December 18, 2026.
