Avatar 3: Fire and Ash may struggle to continue the franchise’s $2 billion streak, as new box office figures suggest a significant gap compared to its predecessor. The film’s latest totals raise questions about its long-term performance both domestically and internationally.
Avatar: Fire and Ash’s latest box office standing
As of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend (January 16–19), Avatar: Fire and Ash has earned $367,410,340 domestically and $955,300,000 internationally, totaling $1,322,710,340 worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. The film opened on December 19, 2025, with a debut of $89,160,860 from 3,800 theaters. It remained in the top spot across five weekends, with its most recent weekend earning $17.2 million from 3,300 theaters.
20th Century Studios distributed Fire and Ash, which carries a PG-13 rating and runs for 3 hours and 17 minutes without intermission breaks. The film reached its widest domestic release in 3,835 theaters. So far, it has earned 27.8% of its revenue from the domestic market and 72.2% from international markets.
Avatar: The Way of Water, released on December 16, 2022, grossed $684,075,767 domestically and $1,636,555,562 internationally, for a worldwide total of $2,320,631,329. By the end of its fifth weekend, it had reached $571,682,103 domestically, outperforming Fire and Ash by $204,271,763 in the same timeframe (via Box Office Mojo).
The Way of Water opened with $134,100,226 in 4,202 theaters. Its fifth weekend gross was $39,880,755 during the MLK holiday frame, compared to Fire and Ash’s $17.2 million. The international revenue growth for Fire and Ash has also slowed compared to its predecessor.
Given current trends, Fire and Ash does not seem to be on track to match the $2 billion global milestones previously achieved by earlier films in the franchise. The sustained drop in weekend earnings and slower international performance contribute to this outlook.
Avatar: Fire and Ash continues playing in theaters nationwide as it enters its sixth week at the box office.
