A major fantasy adaptation in development at Apple TV+ has taken a key step forward, with its writer confirming progress on the script as excitement builds around bringing the beloved book series to the screen.
Brandon Sanderson shares script update for Mistborn movie
Brandon Sanderson recently shared that the screenplay for the planned film adaptation of Mistborn has reached an important stage. In a YouTube update, he revealed the script is now halfway complete. “The screenplay is at 50%. I’m moving right along on that,” he said, adding that early conversations with the studio have been encouraging.
He also noted that while executives haven’t read the full draft yet, he has received “good feedback” about what the studio expects. That early response has boosted his confidence. “I’m feeling really good about how this is going,” Sanderson said, hinting that development is moving in the right direction.
For those not in the know, Mistborn is based on Sanderson’s popular fantasy saga, which began with The Final Empire and grew into a larger series over time. The story follows a group of thieves who use a unique magic system called Allomancy to challenge a powerful empire that has ruled for a thousand years. The mix of heist elements and fantasy world-building has made it a favorite among readers.
This adaptation has had a long journey. Over the years, multiple studios tried to bring the story to life, but earlier attempts didn’t move forward. In 2023, development was even paused. Now, with Apple TV backing the project, things appear more stable and focused (via ScreenRant).
Sanderson’s broader universe, known as the Cosmere, connects several of his works, including The Stormlight Archive and Elantris. The Stormlight Archive is also being explored for adaptations as a TV series. Sanderson is no stranger to adaptations. He previously worked as a consulting producer on The Wheel of Time. Now, he is directly shaping the movie version of his own work.
While the project is still in early stages, this update signals real progress. For fans, it’s a promising sign that the ambitious fantasy film finally seems to be moving closer to becoming a reality.
