One character from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story who shows up in Andor Season 2 is Orson Krennic, played by Ben Mendelsohn. Despite the nine-year gap between 2016’s Rogue One and 2025’s Andor Season 2, Mendelsohn explained why he jumped at the chance to reprise his villainous character.
Why did Ben Mendelsohn return for Andor?
In an interview with Variety, Mendelsohn revealed when creator Tony Gilroy reached out about returning as Krennic in Season 2. It was an immediate “yes” from Mendelsohn.
“Quite a while ago, not that long after the first season,” said Mendelsohn. “Tony just said, ‘Would you be amenable to coming back and just doing a few scenes?’ To which I was like, ‘Fuck yeah, absolutely.’ Michael Clayton is somewhere in my 25 most-loved films of all time. And Krennic and the whole Star Wars experience was a really good one for me. But I had no idea how good it was going to be. It’s taken me by joyous surprise.”
In Rogue One, Krennic is the director of advanced weapons research for the Empire, focusing on the construction of the Death Star. In Andor, Krennic is still ascending within the Imperial ranks, something Mendelsohn quickly pointed out.
“When we see him [Krennic] in Rogue One, we see him at the pinnacle of his achievement, but we also see him at the time when the other marshals of the Empire are going, ‘That looks pretty good. I think perhaps that’s actually my department now,'” Mendelsohn said. “So he’s a lot more animated by that, you know, and obviously the great secret being that Galen Erso is the creator of the Death Star. Although I will never let go of the idea that I built the Death Star. It’s just it’s too good of a line. You see him in more of a halcyon period [in Andor]. This is him still very much ascendant. He’s fruitier at this period.”
Krennic’s story ends in Rogue One, but for now, the Imperial leader will continue his rise in Andor Season 2. The next three episodes will stream on May 6 on Disney+.
