AMC is accelerating development on its upcoming NASCAR-focused drama Thunder Road by casting War Machine star to lead the series. It is a major step forward for the project, which is already in fast-track development and expected to begin production this summer. The show aims to bring a fresh, long-form narrative to one of America’s most iconic sports.
Thunder Road casts Emmy-nominated actor
Thunder Road explores a multi-generational family rooted in NASCAR culture. The story follows the Whitlock family, whose legacy in stock car racing stretches back decades, intertwined with their Southern origins and blue-collar identity. At its core, the series is a mix of high-stakes racing with personal drama, rivalries, and the pressures of legacy.
Now, War Machine star Dennis Quaid takes on the role of Duane Whitlock, also known as “The Wrecking Ball,” Deadline reported. A legendary driver who built a racing empire from humble beginnings tied to moonshine runs and dirt tracks. As the patriarch, he stands at the center of a dynasty facing extinction, fighting to preserve both his legacy and his family’s place in the sport.
The project is being developed in association with NASCAR, making it the first time the organization has collaborated on a long-form scripted drama series. While films like Days of Thunder and docuseries such as Full Speed have previously depicted the sport, Thunder Road aims to offer a deeper, character-driven perspective.
Moreover, the addition of Dennis Quaid significantly strengthens the show’s prospects. Known for his recent role in War Machine, Quaid brings decades of experience across film and television. His career includes an Independent Spirit Award win for Far From Heaven and multiple other nominations. It includes an Emmy nomination for his take on Bill Clinton in The Special Relationship.
The series’ creator is John Fusco, with Taylor Elmore serving as showrunner. Executive producers include Cliff Roberts, Mark L. Smith, along with NASCAR’s Tim Clark and John Dahl.
