Actress Bijou Phillips has revealed she is back in the hospital and urgently searching for a kidney donor, sharing an emotional message about her ongoing health battle.
The Almost Famous star, who previously received a kidney transplant in 2017, said she has faced continued medical complications and is once again undergoing dialysis as she asks for help.
Bijou Phillips asks for help in finding a kidney donor
Bijou Phillips turned to Instagram on Wednesday with a heartfelt request. Sharing photos with her 11-year-old daughter, Fianna, the 45-year-old said she is looking for a kidney donor. She said she is reaching out not just as an actress, but “as a friend, sister, aunt,” and, above all, “a single mother” who wants to be there for her “incredible and brave daughter.”
In another slide labeled “My Story,” Phillips explained that she was born with underdeveloped kidneys and spent her first three months in the NICU on dialysis. In 2017, a close friend donated a kidney, giving her what she described as “eight precious years” to raise her daughter.
However, she said she has faced several medical complications since that transplant. Phillips revealed that she’s been battling the BK virus, “which led to both a cellular and antibody rejection.”
She’s now back on dialysis and is being treated by Dr. Anjay Rastogi at UCLA. In a heartfelt message, she urged people to consider becoming a living donor, saying she wants more time with her daughter, loved ones, and close friends. “Time is of the essence,” she shared.
Back in 2017, when Phillips first required a kidney transplant, a spokesperson told PEOPLE that she had been maintaining a low-stress routine and sticking to a vegan diet before quietly starting dialysis.
Just two months later, she underwent a transplant that was described at the time by her then-husband, Danny Masterson, as “100% successful.”
