Netflix will soon begin streaming seasons 1 to 5 of a popular crime-drama series. Southland, created by Ann Biderman, originally debuted on NBC in 2009. It was canceled after one season despite an initial renewal for Season 2. The series eventually found a new home at TNT, where it aired for four more seasons between 2010 and 2013.
Five seasons of Southland begin streaming on Netflix in January
All five seasons of Southland will start streaming on Netflix on January 16, 2026. The series will be one of the several cop dramas arriving on the streaming giant this month. The list also includes Fox’s Prodigal Son and another TNT series, Rizzoli & Isles (via What’s on Netflix).
Predominantly set in Los Angeles, Southland explores various facets of the city and sheds light on the police officers who maintain order there. The cast comprises Michael Cudlitz as John Cooper, Ben McKenzie as Ben Sherman, Regina King as Lydia Adams, Shawn Hatosy as Sammy Bryant, C. Thomas Howell as Bill “Dewey” Dudek, Kevin Alejandro as Nate Moretta, Michael McGrady as Daniel “Sal” Salinger, Tom Everett as Scott Russell Clarke, and more.
Throughout its run, Southland enjoyed mostly positive responses from critics. It has garnered an impressive 77% approval rating on the review-aggregating site Rotten Tomatoes for its inaugural season. The show received a 94% rating for Season 2 following its TNT debut. For Season 3, it drew an 83% rating, followed by a perfect 100% rating for both fourth and fifth seasons. The show also received multiple Primetime Emmys and one Peabody Award.
Despite this, TNT ultimately canceled the show after the fifth season. “TNT has made the difficult decision not to renew Southland for another season,” the network noted in a statement at the time. “We are enormously proud of Southland, which stands as one of the best police dramas ever made” (via Deadline). There were reports of conversations about ending the story with a movie or a miniseries, but nothing has really happened on that front.
