All four seasons of Starz’s original pirate show will leave Netflix next month. The Emmy-winning series, co-produced by Michael Bay, ran for four seasons and served as the prequel to Elijah Wood’s 2012 mini-series Treasure Island.
Black Sails leaves Netflix in April
All four seasons of Black Sails will leave Netflix on Friday, April 17, 2026. Originally aired on Starz in 2014, the series is the prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1883 novel Treasure Island, which was also adapted into a two-part television series starring Elijah Wood.
The story is set during the Golden Age of Piracy, nearly two decades before the events of Treasure Island. It follows Captain James Flint and his crew as they attempt to locate the Spanish treasure galleon Urca de Lima. Subsequent seasons delve deeper into the pirates’ fate.
Several of the Black Sails’ storylines are based on real historical events. While some events are presented as they happened, others are fictionalized for dramatic effect. The writers also reportedly based some of the characters on real-life pirates, including Anne Bonny, Benjamin Hornigold, and Mary “Mark” Reed.
Jonathan E. Steinberg and Robert Levine serve as the showcreators. Meanwhile, Bear McCreary composed the opening title. The series features an expansive cast, including Toby Stephens, Hannah New, Luke Arnold, Jessica Parker Kennedy, Tom Hopper, and Zach McGowan.
The first episode of Black Sails premiered on YouTube on January 18, 2014. It was followed by its debut on Starz on January 25, 2014. Interestingly, Starz renewed the show for a second season months ahead of its premiere following a favorable reception at the 2013 San Diego Comic Con.
The series ran for four seasons, ending with its series finale on April 2, 2017. During its run, it won three Primetime Emmy awards—two awards in 2014 and one in 2016. Moreover, it has an average rating of more than 80% from both critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.
