Adam Sandler believes Ariana Grande should star in a remake of his classic 1998 comedy, The Waterboy.
What did Adam Sandler say about a possible The Waterboy remake?
Sandler and Grande sat down for Variety and CNN’s Actors on Actors franchise. During their conversation, Grande revealed her adoration for one of Sandler’s most famous characters, Bobby Boucher. Grande praised Sandler for bringing truth to his comedic performances, including his “gut-wrenching” work in The Waterboy.
“You’ve been able to make room for both these incredible, dramatic roles and, also, some of the most iconic comedic roles of all time,” Grande said to Sandler. “One role that really has both worlds is Bobby Boucher and The Waterboy. Sounds crazy, but he makes me cry a lot.”
Sandler appreciated the kind words and explained why he has such a deep connection to the football player.
“My children showed me you discussing Bobby, and it meant a lot to me because I love Bobby. I love him so much,” Sandler explained. “I love being that guy. I love feeling what Bobby felt as an outsider and wanting to feel calm and safe with Mama. Also, a little nervous with Mama! But I love that it connected with you.”
Because of Grande’s love for the character, Sandler suggested that Grande and his Happy Gilmore co-star should headline a potential remake of The Waterboy.
“If they’re ever redoing The Waterboy — I don’t know who would; I should never — maybe Ben Stiller can play Bobby, and you can play Vicky Valencourt,” Sandler said.
Grande quickly shot the idea down due to her appreciation for the original.
“Oh my goodness, no,” Grande replied. “Leave perfect things alone as they are. You do such a magnificent job of grounding your comedy and humanness.”
Released in 1998, The Waterboy was directed by Frank Coraci and written by Sandler and Tim Herlihy. Despite negative reviews, The Waterboy still grossed over $190 million on a $23 million budget. The cult classic is now one of Sandler’s most beloved comedies.
