A copy of Action Comics #1, which first introduced the character of Superman to the world in 1938 and was once owned by Nicolas Cage, recently sold for $15 million to an anonymous buyer. This huge figure has cemented the comic book’s status as one of the most valuable issues in comic book history.
Nicolas Cage’s former Superman issue becomes one of the most expensive comics ever sold
On January 9, The New York Times confirmed that a high-grade copy of Action Comics No. 1, which marked the first appearance of Superman, was sold to an unidentified buyer for $15 million.
The original comic that introduces the Man of Steel has fewer than 100 authentic copies at present, which significantly contributes to its high price, according to Metropolis Collectibles and ComicConnect president Vincent Zurzolo. Notably, the Superman comic was once a prized possession of Hollywood veteran Nicolas Cage.
Priced at 10 cents upon its debut, Cage purchased the iconic comic in 1996 from Metropolis Collectibles and ComicConnect for $150,000. However, during a 2000 party at the actor’s residence, an unnamed perpetrator ended up stealing the comic. It remained missing for over a decade before resurfacing in 2011 in a storage unit in California.
Nicolas Cage ultimately decided to cash in on the item, selling Superman’s debut comic for $2.2 million at an auction.
The comic is worth a lot more now, being sold for $15 million in a private sale recently. The Certified Guaranty Company, an organization that specializes in verifying the authenticity of high-value collectibles, has bestowed an impressive score of 9.0 upon the comic book. This implies that, although the copy harbors certain minor defects, it remains in a well-preserved state.
Both the buyer and seller for the recent sale of the comic have chosen to keep their identities private.
