James Cameron and Walt Disney Studios continue to dominate the box office as two major releases hold strong against the wave of new 2026 titles. Both films remain top contenders in theaters, maintaining their momentum weeks after release despite growing competition.
Avatar: Fire and Ash stays strong at box office against all competition
Avatar: Fire and Ash topped the domestic box office for the fourth consecutive weekend, earning $21.3 million from 3,700 theaters. The film has now grossed $342.6 million domestically and $888 million internationally, bringing its worldwide total to $1.23 billion (via Box Office Mojo). It is the first film since Barbie (2023) to remain No. 1 for four weekends in a row.
The second spot went to Paramount’s horror release Primate, which debuted with $11.3 million in North America across 2,964 theaters and earned $13.4 million globally in its opening weekend. Lionsgate’s The Housemaid ranked third with $11.2 million domestically, bringing its total to $94.15 million in North America and $192.5 million worldwide after four weeks.
Zootopia 2 is placed fourth with $10.1 million in its seventh weekend of release. The Disney animated sequel has now made $378.8 million domestically and $1.65 billion globally, nearing the all-time record for Disney animated releases. Greenland 2: Migration rounded out the top five with an $8.5 million domestic debut from 2,710 theaters.
According to Comscore, this weekend’s box office revenue was up 23% compared to the same weekend in 2025. Avatar: Fire and Ash surpassed the lifetime domestic total of Michael Bay’s 2007 film Transformers, which grossed $318 million. James Cameron’s third Avatar installment is his fourth film to surpass the $1 billion mark globally, following Titanic, Avatar, and Avatar: The Way of Water.
The original Avatar earned $2.9 billion globally, while The Way of Water reached $2.3 billion. Cameron remains the only director with three films grossing over $2 billion and four surpassing $1 billion globally.
